Chief Joseph (Insta Maza, Iron Eye) was the last recognized chief of the Omaha Tribe. He was a the son of Joseph La Flesche, a French-Canadian trader (b. abt 1790) and his wife, Madeline "Me-me ta ga" Wolf, a woman of the Ponca tribe.

It is believed he had three wives, the last one being Mary (Hinnuagsnun, One Woman) Gale, daughter of Dr. John Gale and Ni-co-mi of the Iowa tribe.

He advocated Indian integration with white society. He raised all of his children to be independent, educated, and adaptable to a changing Indian society.

Joseph and Mary were the parents of Susette (1854-1902), Francis (1857-1932), Rosalie (1861-1900), Marquerite (1864- ), Susan (1865-1915), and Carey (1873-1952).

Researching his father, the only item I found was a U.S. IRS Tax Assessment Lists, 1862-1918 dated September 1864 for a J.L. LaFlesh, occupation of Auction Sales, living in Niles, Michigan.
