Fred Richterkessing served with the Louisville Police Department from 1892 until his death. He was shot in the head with a pistol by a subordinate patrolman, Officer George Hanlon, at Sixth and Broadway Streets. The subordinate had a dispute with Corporal Richterkessing about a reprimand he'd received. Hanlon was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
