- entered the service of the Confederate States in April 1861 at Montgomery, enlisting in the "Russell County Volunteer," the first Company from Russell County.

- made Lieutenant - Then Lieut. Bickerstaff assumed command, only to meet a similaiar fate, receiving a dangerous wound through the thigh. On account of this experience (having been in command of his Father's troops for a short time) after the war, he was frequently called "Capt. Bickerstaff" by his comrades.
