Officer Cannon was shot and killed instantly in front of the grocery store of J.B. Starks, Jr., at the northwest corner of Jackson and Roselane Streets at about 6:35 p.m. It is believed that Officer Cannon who had just started his shift at 6:00 p.m. was on his way from the police station to Engine House #9 near the corner of Jackson and Roselane Streets when he was fatally shot. This is near the same spot where Officer Edward Byrnes of the Louisville Police Department was murdered in 1895.

His accused murderer surrendered himself two years later. He was acquitted of the murder after a jury trial primarily due to the lack of substantial evidence.

Officer Cannon served with the Louisville Division of Police from 1904 until his death. He was survived by a wife and three young children.
