Husband of Catherine Feuerstein.

The Melchior family originated in France, but later lived in Germany in the neighborhood of Schwemeling, Prussia; for generations they were shoemakers until Carl broke the tradition.

The first of whom we have definite knowledge is Bernard Melchior who lived at the beginning of the nineteenth century; his son Michael Melchior came to Ahnapee (Algoma) in 1866 and has many descendents in Kewaunee County.
Mathias, son of Michael Melchior, immigrated in 1859 and worked in Manitowoc and in Chicago prior to locating in Ahnapee in 1860; here he engaged in the shoe business which he conducted until 1888, when he retired to look after his investments; in 1873 he became post mater at Algoma and held office four years.
In 1862, Math. Melchior was married to Catherine Feuerstein of Manitowoc; they always lived in Algoma, where the husband died May 24, 1912, followed in death by his wife Feb 16, 1929, both were buried from the Catholic church of which they were lifelong members.
Carl J., youngest son of Math. Melchior was born July 2, 1876 was educated in the Cath. Parochial school and Algoma high school; at the age of seventeen was apprenticed to Wenzel Heck at Kewaunee to learn jewelry and watch making; after completing his course he remained in the employ of Mr. Heck five years; in 1901 he engaged in business at Algoma, still doing business business at the same location, exceeded in length of service by only one contemporary on Stulo Street.
