Officer Murphy served with the Louisville Division of Police from 1906 until his death. He was off duty when he heard the sound of gunshots near 19th and Baird Streets. After investigating he found a man had been shot. After locating and confronting the alleged shooter the man then shot Officer Murphy in the head. The subject was arrested but he was acquitted at trial on self-defense claims.
