John Sands Avery, son of John Avery b. Aug 19, 1782 at Groton, married April 1812 Bethiah Williams, daughter of Seth Williams & Abigail (Williams) Williams, born Nov 11, 1787 in Ledyard.
She died May 29, 1817 (her stone says something different).
John then married 2nd Aug 29, 1819 at Groton, Sally Smith, daughter of Oliver Smith & Mary Denison, and widow of John Clark, her second husband. Her first husband was Jonathan Clark. She was born Aug 28, 1779 at Stonington. John Sands Avery was a farmer and merchant, was appointed ensign of 1st co. 3rd Regt, Oct 1804, to take rank from Sept 2, 1804; was appointed Lieutenant of same company, May 22, 1805 (Ms. State Paper, Hartford); was a private in the war of 1812 in Capt. Meechs co., in 1813; corp. in Capt Allen's co., in 1814 (Conn Men in War of 1812, pg 7). He died Nov 16, 1848; she died March 14, 1871.
