Johann Jost Klingelhöfer was born at 5 o’clock in the morning on 11 July 1802 to Johannes Klingelhöfer XII and 2nd wife Anna Margarethe Müller in Eiershsn, Hessen-Nassau, Prussia. He was baptized a few days later on July 15 as witnessed by: Johannes Jost and Anna Elisabetha Fürschbach and Jakobs Hartmann and his wife.
J. J. K.’s childhood was spent in Eiershsn, but he moved to Eibelshausen after marriage on 23 Oct. 1828 to Maria Elisabeth Weil, born 25 Nov. 1803 to Jakob Heinrich Weil and Maria Elisabeth Hofheinz of Eibelshausen. She died 24 Sept. 1840 24 Sept. 1840 in Eibelshausen. Children from the marriage were:
1. Elizabeth, born 18 May1828, died 16 May 1833 in Eibelshausen.
2. Christina, born 8 Jan.1830, died 15 May 1833 in Eibelshausen.
3. August, born 9 Jan. 1832 in Eibelshausen, missing, assumed dead at battle of Vicksburg, MS during American Civil War.
4. Luise (Louisa) born 9 Jan. 1834, died Fredericksburg 25 April 1903; married Fredericksburg 2 Dec.1851 to Conrad Wehmeyer, born 16 Feb.1816 in Prussia, died 21 Oct. 1898 in Fredericksburg.
5. Julie, born 29 April 1836, died Eibelshausen 10 July 1837.
6. Henriette, born 16 Nov. 1838, born 17 Dec. 1910 in Fredericksburg; married Wilhelm Sänger, born 1834 in Nassau.
7. Julius, born 16 Sept.1840, died Eibelshausen 13 Aug.1843.
During the time J.J. K. was married to E.W., he also had a relationship with Elisabeth Heiland, born 3 July 1810 and, died in Fredericksburg, Texas 1881, She was daughter of Johann Jakob Heiland and Elisabeth Müller of Eibelshausen. He then married her as his 2nd wife on 21 January 1843, after death of first wife. Children with Elizabeth Heiland were:

10. Wilhelmine, born 5 Oct. 1843, possibly died onboard ship or soon after arrival in Texas.
11. Karl Heinrich, born 4 Dec. 1844, died Eibelshausen 18 Dec..1844.
12. and 13. Twins, born and died during the passage to Texas.

From April 18-June 20, 1845, the Klingelhoefer family travelled from Bremen, Germany on the ship Brig Johann Dethardt to Galveston, Texas as part of the Great German Migration. Family members listed on the ship's manifest include: Klingelhoefer, Johann Just, Elise nee Heiland, August, Louise, Henriette, Elise, Wilhelmine. (Pioneers in God's Hills says they arrived in 1846 at Indianola. However, the Galveston record is probably more accurate.) The family first went to New Braunfels, then settled in Fredericksburg, Gillespie County in the spring of 1847. The Klingelhoefer home is still standing in 2017 and is the oldest building in the city.
In 1850, J.J. K. ran for Chief Justice in Gillespie County, getting elected, but then disqualified because not U.S. citizen. He then became naturalized on Nov. 11 of that year, and ran the next year, winning again, During his administration, work began on the first Gillespie County Courthouse. He also served as Justice of the Peace in 1852.
Johann Jost Klingelhöfer (Klingelhoefer) died Fredericksburg, Gillespie, Texas on 1 May 1886, where he is buried.
