On August 18, 1845 Jacob Aurand and Heinrich Strackbein from Steinbruecken, Nassau signed contracts with the German Immigration Company for the transport of them and their families, consisting of 10 additional persons in Jacob's family and seven additional persons in Heinrich's family, to the Republic of Texas. They departed from Antwerp, Belgium on the ship Arminius, Jacob's party consisting of Jacob, his wife, Anna Elisabeth Wickel (age 41 - shown as Nickel in Chester W. Geue and Ethel H. Geue, A New Land Beckoned, German Immigration to Texas, 1844-1847) their children, Jacob, Friedrich, Friedrich Wilhlelm , Caroline (12 years of age according to the membership register of the Zion Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg) and Wilhelmine (4 years of age according to the membership register of the Zion Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg), Friedrich Aurand, a single man over the age of 17, and Elizabetha Aurand, a widow with two children. Henry Strackbein's party included himself (age 38), his wife Elisabeth (35) and children Elisabeth (13), Catherine (11), Henry (5), and Christian (4). The ship departed from Bremen on August 18, 1845 and arrived in Galveston on October 15, 1845 with 124 immigrants on board. The group made their way inland. Jacob Aurand, Sr. died in New Braunfels on June 5, 1846 before he could apply for a land grant with the German Emmigration and Railroad Company. No further records were found for Jacob Aurand, and it is not known where he was buried. Sometime afterward the Aurand and Strackbein families made their way to Gillespie County.
