Ruby graduated from Hazlehurst High School at the age of sixteen on May 19, 1924. There were only eleven grades in school at that time. She stayed home the year after her high school graduation because of her own mother's illness.
She then attended Massey Business College in Jacksonville, FL. She graduated with a business certificate. She returned to Hazlehurst and became a bookkeeper for R.E. Jarman & Sons Hardware Store. She was also employed with the Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA) as head clerk and typist. During World War II, she was appointed administrative officer, where she served until the war was over. She continued working with AAA until 1951. She was then employed by Cook and Company in payroll and insurance and continued until her retirement in 1974.
She was a member of United Methodist Women of the First United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Order of Eastern Star as well as a charter member of the Business and Professional Women's Club.
