Norwich Courier (Norwich, CT), Jan. 23, 1828, p. 3:
Died, At Groton, on the 10th instant, EBENEZER AVERY, Esq. Aged 82 years. He was a volunteer in Fort Griswold, on the deplorable 6th of September, 1781, and bore a distinguished part in that bloody battle, in which he was severely wounded, and beaten with the butt of a musket, until supposed to be dead. He however revived and lived a long series of years an exemplary and highly respected citizen.---N. L. Gazette
