"Mrs. Jerusha R. Whittlesey died last week Wednesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harriet Collins in Chicago, after an illness of one week with influenza. Mrs. Whittlesey was born in Canfield, March 31, 1823, consequently was nearly 78 years of age. Her maiden name was Jerusha Lockwood, her parents being among the early settlers of this locality. In 1845 (sic) she was married to Wm. W. Whittlesey, a son of the late Elisha Whittlesey, who was long a conspicuous figure in the political and military affairs of the country. They resided in Canfield until 1868 when they removed to Washington, D. C., where Mr. Whittlesey died in1895. Four children survive - Mrs. Collins of Chicago, Clayton of Washington, Miss Lucy of New York, and William of Dallas, Texas. The deceased was a woman of excellent qualities and posessed a wide circle of friends. She was a devoted member of the Episcopal church which had charge of the funeral services Friday. The remains arrived in Canfield Saturday at noon, accompanied by William Whittlesey of Dallas, Henry Lockwood, George and Grant Whittlesey of Cleveland, and were met at the train by quite a number of citizens. The body was placed in the vault and later will be entombed in the family lot in the village cemetery."
