Max, who resided in Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Technician Fifth Grade in the 285th Field Artillery Observation Battalion, U.S. Army during World War II.

He was "Killed While a POW" during the "Malmedy Massacre" during the war along with 83 other American Soldiers by the German Army.

He had served in the Army for one year and five months at the time of his death and was awarded the Prisoner Of War Medal and the Purple Heart.
