Nathaniel Root of Lafayette, Onondaga County, of New York, pension papers

On this twenty fifth day of August in the year 1834, personally appeared in open Court, before Judges of the court in Canaan, pleas in aforesaid County now sitting at the courthouse in the town of Salina in said County
Nathaniel Root, a resident of the town of Lafayette, aged sixty eight years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath, make the following declaration in
order to obtain the benefit of provisions made by the act of Congress posed June 7th 1832. That according to the best of his knowledge, he was born in the year 1766, in the town of Canaan, Litchfield County, State of Connecticut, knows of no record of his age, except the record made at his baptism (his parents being Presbyterians) kept by the clerk of said town.

That this deponent entered the service of the United States in the Revolutionary War under the following named officers and service as herein stated: That his brother-in-law, Samuel Root, enlisted as he believes in the first part of 1782 at Canaan, under Capt Abner Granger, Lieut Wilson and Ensign Tibbits (the first names of the two last declarant cannot recall) and was marched to Horn neck in said state of Connecticut when said company was attached to the Regiment commanded by Col Samuel Caufield consisting of four compounds of infantry stationed at that place same of which were commanded by Captains Allen Stoddard & Miles, that after said Samuel Root had been a short time at Horn neck he was taken lame by means of a fever sore & was put into the Hospital and this declarant’s Father went down to make an arrangement with the officers to have him return home, and this declarants service in his place. And that this declarant on the Last of March or first of April, 1782, extend the said service as substitute for said Samuel Root at Horn neck aforesaid under the officers first aforesaid as a private soldier at that place and under the same officers at least seven months until the first of November in the same year when said Samuel Root having mended from his layup returned and took his place. This declarant was permitted to return home.

The regiment of Infantry under the command of Colonel Caufield consisted of about 4 or 500 men and this declarant was at Horn neck when principally engaged in keeping guard and scouting for British and Tories, had a few skirmishes, but no important battle, has no
recollection of being acquainted with any command or officers in the revolution except the officers above mentioned and the sergeant of said regiment whose name was Hooper Hough, when this declarant extended said service he resided in Canaan aforesaid and continued to reside there until the Spring of 1811 when he moved to Whitestown, Oneida County, and state of New York. He lived there for four years and at Deerfield in said County a year, then moved to Frankfort, Herkimer County, in said state, lived there two years, then moved to the town and county of Onondaga, lived there five years, then moved to Lafayette in county last aforesaid where he has since lived.

He has no recollection of having received any written discharge and believes he received only a pass to allow him to pass the different guards and a verbal permit to go home, and has no documentary evidence to prove his service and that he knows of no person by whom he can prove his said service except Levi Allen of the town of Onondaga aforesaid whose affidavit is hereunto amended that he is not acquainted with any clergyman in his present
neighborhood now residing near him but he is acquainted with Alexander Vroman David McClary in his present neighborhood, who can testify as to his character for verify and their belief of his service as a soldier of the revolution and he hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a person or amenty except that pursued and declares that his name is not on a pension roll of the agency of any state.
