The Ruddell family crossed the Oregon Trail in 1852. Cathern's mother died in their first year in Washington. Her husband, Augustus Balch, drowned in 1894 after their four-year-old son fell out of a boat as the family crossed the river to their home near Oakville. Their son, George, age 4, also drowned. Left with 12 children, the youngest three months old, she never remarried. In addition to losing George, a daughter died at age four and Cathern bore still-born twins who were buried on the family property.
