Gene Lewis Turner was born Jean Louis Turner, but changed the spelling of his name when he became an adult.

Gene married Patricia "Pat" Bridges on January 17, 1946 in Long Beach, California, where his ship the Alabama was in port.

He served as a yeoman 2nd Class US Navy World War II USS Alabama

The USS Alabama (BB-60) a.k.a. "Lucky A" Honors and awards Received: Nine Battle Stars, a South Dakota-class battleship, was the sixth completed ship named Alabama of the United States Navy, however she was only the third commissioned ship with that name. Alabama was commissioned in 1942 and served in World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. She was decommissioned in 1947 and assigned to the reserve duty. She retired in 1962. In 1964, Alabama was taken to Mobile Bay and opened as a museum ship the following year. The ship was added to the National Historic Landmark registry in 1986.

After serving in the Navy during World War II Gene got his CPA and worked as the Finanical Officer for Smith Brothers Manufacturing in Carthage.

He and Pat raised two daughters, Carla Jean Turner and Dana Lee Turner before divorcing in 1977.
