Detective Hagan served with the Louisville Division of Police from 1929 until his death. He was shot and killed while on duty working a stakeout. He was survived by his wife.

Chester Campbell was convicted for the murder of Detective Hagan and sentenced to the electric chair. However, Campbell's murder conviction and sentence was appealed and he was granted a new trial. Before the trial was to begin he pled guilty to an amended charge and accepted a "life" sentence. After serving 9 years of the "life" sentence he was paroled.

Walter Woosley was charged in the murder. A jury found him guilty of being an accessory to murder and sentenced him to two years to serve.
