Kelly, John Henry
No Land To Clear
One feature of the High Plains' treeless expanse which appealed to those moving here from wooded areas was the fact that the land could be tilled without the backbreaking grubbing they had known in clearing farm land elsewhere, according to Walter Kelly, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Kelly who came to this county in January, 1900.
However, when their cattle began to eat the locoweed growing around the lakes on their six-section ranch five miles north-west of Hereford, the children joined their parents in digging out the low growing gray-green plant which caused permanent damage to the animals - the plant evidently got its name (loco, crazy) from the fact that animals that had eaten it acted as if they were drunk, lost weight, and were useless. The plants had to be gathered and burned, as the livestock would continue to eat them even after they had been dug and dried.
The Kelly children soon learned, too, to pick up cow chips, picking those that were dry and would produce a quick blue flame. It was said that it took three people to keep a chip fire going - one to pick them up, one to feed the fire, and one to carry out ashes. Women new to their use could be spotted easily, for they always washed their hands scrupulously after handling the chips, one of the boys recalled.
John Henry Jelly was born in Collin County, Tex., on April 8, 1862; he was a great-grandson of Collin McKinney, who signed the Declaration of Independence. Mary Cannon was born in Grayson County , Tex. , on Sept. 24, 1865, and was married to J. H. Kelly at Van Alstyne, Tex., on Jan. 3, 1889. They lived in Collin County until their move to Deaf Smith County in 1900.
Kelly had come to the plains seeking a more beautiful climate and had taken up a claim, enlarging the dug-out left there. He paid $2.50 per acre for land which he sold in 1906 for $15 an acre. The home place which they built still stands, and John Dale Kelly, Sr., who now lives at Hereford , was born there on February 22, 1906.
The Kellys [sic] sold their ranch in 1906 and lived in Hereford for a time before moving to Stanton in 1907. He died there in 1936. Mrs. Kelly is now the oldest resident of Martin County .
J. D. Kelly Sr., returned to Hereford in 1949, buying the Progressive half-section which he sold when he moved to Panhandle in 1955. He returned to this county and bought the place south of town in 1960. His wife is the former Lois Sanders, and they have three children. Patsy (Mrs. R. P.) Odom, Stanton; John Dale Kelly, Jr., Panhandle; and Charles of the home.
The J. H. Kellys [sic] were the parents of Claude (Esta Atchison), Stanton; Blanche (Mrs. Claude) McClung, Kilgore; Neva (Mrs. Boliver) Marchant, Electra; Walter (Stella Atchison), Stanton; and Mamie (Mrs. Roy) Burcham, Fort Worth (both deceased). There are 13 grand-children, 21 great-grand-children, and six great-great-grand-children. (A History of Deaf Smith County, by Bessie Patterson, 1964 ; transcribed by Sandra Stutzman)
