In 1862, when Benjamin was away -Civil War, his wife Elizabeth was called to a neighbor's home because of the neighbor child's illness. Not knowing what the illness was, she unknowingly carried scarlet fever back to her own household. Elizabeth and all three children died in 1862 from scarlet fever.
