Emigrated in 1834 and spent his first year in Philadelphia. In 1835 he took a coastal sailing ship to New Orleans. By river boat, he traveled up the Mississippi until he finally reached Galena, Wisconsin. He probably made his way from Galena to Gratiots Grove and Wiota on foot. He took up the occupation of farming.
On 4 Aug 1836, Robert married Madalena Rindesbacher; together they had eleven children. She died very soon after the eleventh.
On 7 Dec 1859 Robert married Betsy/Betsey Tweed or Tweed Anderson. They had 5 children; Betsy died when the youngest was four.
On 17 May 1871 Robert married Britta Marie Oman. They had 5 children; one of them died before Robert did in 1885.
