During the rally, Sister Catherine Dreiling, CSJ, a long-time mentor, teacher and administrator in the Diocese of Wichita, was inducted into the Catholic School Hall of Heritage for Service and Sacrifice to Catholic education.
The Heritage Hall was established in 2003 to recognize those individuals whose contributions to Catholic education made a permanent impact.
Sister Catherine, a native of Hays, KS, taught in parish schools in Pratt, Independence, Kingman, Pittsburg, and Arkansas City. When she died in 1983, she had given 45 years of service to Catholic education.
My research found her parents to be Balthasar Michael Dreiling, born Nov. 1, 1875 in Herzoa (Susly) Russia and died in Victoria, KS. Her mother Gertrude Linenberger Dreiling born May 8, 1879 in Russia and died Nov. 19, 1925 in Victoria, KS. They came to KS from Russia at the age of about 1 year. Her siblings (last names Dreiling) were Adolph Anthony, Regina, Mathilda, Eleanor, William David, Hermalina M., Lucy B., Paul George, Hermalina, Albert J., Robert Harles, and Louis W. Her parents were married Nov. 23, 1896 at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria, KS.
Sister Catherine's given name was Florence. She took the name of Sr. M. Catherine when she became a nun.
In 1930 she was living in Wichita, KS and was listed as a student. She was living in Mt. Saint Mary's Convent.
In 1940 She was living in Kingman, KS and was listed as a Parochial teacher. She was living in St. Patrick Convent. She had completed 4 years of college.
As her friend and administrator of this record I would like to say Sister Catherine became a wonderful friend of mine when she worked for awhile at the St. Joseph Medical Center in Ponca City. We spent many hours together. We shared an office. Sometimes I went over to the convent by the hospital and we would visit more. Although I am not a Catholic, but rather a Methodist, we were great friends. We both loved the Lord. I went to see her later when she moved to the retirement facility for nuns in Wichita, KS which I believe is a part of Mt. St. Mary's Convent.
