There are many Fred stories-one of my favorites is regarding ice cream. Saturday afternoons, after his chores were done, my husband would grab a pint or quart out of the freezer, wrap a towel around it, and sit on the couch to watch TV, usually football or bowling. Fred would climb up for a sniff and sometimes a taste, and then get down. One day the pint of choice was Haagen Dazs strawberry, and Fred jumped up to check it out, liked what he smelled and wanted some. My husband held out the spoon and he gobbled it down and wanted more. Well, Jerry said, I think Fred has a favorite flavor. This went on for months. Then one day at the grocery store, Jerry says, I'm tired of sharing my strawberry Haagen Dazs with Fred. I'm gonna get him a pint of his own, and grabbed some Arden strawberry. After we got home and put the groceries away, Jerry put some of the Arden in a bowl, set it down on the floor in the den, and called Fred. He came, saw the bowl and walked up to investigate. He took one sniff, gave us a look that said you've gotta be kidding, turned and stalked out of the room, leaving us rolling on the floor in laughter. The Arden died a slow death in the freezer, unwanted by all.

My husband, whom I adored and he knew it, used to say, if you love me half as much as you love Fred, I'll die happy.

Father and Brotherhood
When his kittens were coming into the world, Fred would wade right into the birthing nest and help the mother clean them up. He also would bathe and groom them. And when mama went to be spayed after her last litter and the kittens were running all over the house crying and looking for her, he climbed up onto the couch and laid down so they could "nurse."

One day my husband and I were in the front yard, and heard much barking up the street. It was 2 dogs chasing Fred's brother, Ferdinand, who was headed for home and safety. Out of nowhere a red and white furry streak ran straight at the dogs. They were so startled they came to a screeching halt, turned around and headed back up the street, with Fred in hot pursuit. When he was sure they got the message, he turned around and came home. Ferdinand went up to greet him, and I'm sure gave him a big thanks.
