OBIT: Sheridan Post/Jan 16, 1914
"GUN SHOT FATAL
JAMES MORGAREIDGE, PROMINENT TRI-COUNTY OFFICIAL ACCIDENTALLY SHOOTS HIMSELF
He was cleaning a revolver. The weapon unexpectedly exploded piercing heart with a bullet...victim was deputy sheriff for Sheridan, Johnson and Campbell Counties... Death was instantaneous.

Late last night this intelligence reached Sheridan, with the result that Coroner Smith of Kooi, and Undersheriff Veach left on #44 for the scene of the reported tragedy. At that time there were no particulars beyond the bare statement that Mr Morgareidge had been shot and instantly killed. The character of the new led to the belief in Sheridan that Mr Morgareidge had been murdered. This illusion, however, was dispelled by later investigation by the officials.

INQUEST HELD

Upon the arrival of the coroner and other officials, including the sheriffs of Johnson and Campbell counties, under whom Mr Morgareidge was a deputy sheriff as well as a deputy under Sheriff Hoop, was engaged in cleaning a revolver, when the weapon was accidentally discharged, the bullet therefrom entering the body on the lefty side and passing through the heart.

The dead was married and leaves his wife and three children to mourn his departure. One daughter lives in this city; a brother resides at Kaycee, while another, Charles Morgareidge, is employed by Captain Snivley at the Wrench ranch north of Sheridan. Alva T and J W Morgareidge of Sheridan are cousins.

Deceased was about 45 years old and was a man highly respected. For some time he had been serving as a special deputy for the three counties mentioned above, combining with that avocation stock inspection and other duties adding to his income. He was a member of the Masonic, Odd Fellows and Woodmen orders.

No arrangements for the funeral have at this writing been made, but it will probably occur in Sunday, with burial in Buffalo possibly."
