Dr. Michael Leon Treece, 61, formerly of Murphysboro, died at 6:20 a.m. Thursday, June 17, 2010, in the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna.

He was born Sept. 26, 1948, in Fort Worth, Texas, the son of Martin Leon and Opal (Dillow) Treece.

Michael graduated from AJCHS class of 1966 and Illinois College in 1970 and Loyola Medical School, completing his residency in Internal Medicine in 1976. Upon completion of his residency he opened his medical practice in Southern Illinois and remained here through his 30 year career. His medical practices were located in Murphysboro and Carbondale; however, his thousands of patients came from all over Southern Illinois. His lifelong dedication to his patients and ensuring they receive the best medical care kept him busy around the clock but he always felt it was his responsibility to be there for those whom he cared for.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, a member of the American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society and a staff physician at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital and Memorial Hospital of Carbondale for 30 years. He enjoyed collecting coins, art, photography, reading about world history, traveling and most importantly being the best dad he could possibly be.

Michael was of the Baptist faith and on July 6, 1958, he made a profession of faith in Jesus. He was baptized on August 24, 1958 at the Columbus Baptist Temple in Columbus, Ohio.

Michael dedicated his life to his two boys, Zachary and Jackson, and to his thousands of patients throughout Southern Illinois. Throughout his life he touched the hearts of his many patients and their families, but Michael always felt his two boys were his greatest accomplishments. His happiest times were spent with his sons, and being a proud dad at all their sporting events.

Michael is survived by his two sons, Zachary Michael Treece and Jackson Thomas Treece, both of Carbondale; mother, Opal Treece of Anna; two sisters, Carol Otrich and Devra Treece, both of Anna; one niece, Christine (Ron) Gramann of Breese; one great nephew, Spencer Gramann of Breese; and other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Martin Leon Treece.

Funeral services for Dr. Michael Leon Treece will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2010, in Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Anna, with the Rev. Tony Foeller officiating. Interment will be in Casper Cemetery, with military honors at the grave by Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 of the VFW in Anna and the Illinois National Guard Honor Team. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna activity fund.

He will be sadly missed by his sons, Zachary and Jackson, his family, friends and his patients.
