He died of injuries sustained from a non-combat related incident. He attended Arlington's Yorktown High School, where he played cello in the orchestra and tuba in the band. He graduated in 1986 as co-valedictorian. He studied history at Oberlin College in Ohio, graduating in 1991, and he later took graduate classes in pre-medical and chiropractic studies. He was an Army physician assistant, serving in the Army National Guard when he signed up for active duty after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001. He worked as a medic in South Korea before being stationed in Iraq, where he was serving his second tour at the time of his death.
He was survived by his parents; his wife of 12 years; two daughters; and two sisters.
Interment on July 20, 2010.
