Below this monument are buried 467 heroes of the revolution of 1830. Twenty-six of them were not Belgians, but rallied to the cause. The revolution broke out following a performance of Auber's opera 'La Muette de Portici' at the Brussels Opera House. The success led to the crowning of King Leopold I who dedicated the monument in 1838.
