John Lester Adams, 80, an early day resident of Laing community, died Saturday [Jun 16, 1962] at his home in Stillwater, following a lengthy illness. He had lived at Frederick from 1925 to 1957, when he moved to Stillwater. In 1957 he became diabetic and had since suffered several strokes.
Adams was a brother of Herman Adams, Mrs. Paul Collins and Mrs. Will Young, all of this community.
Funeral services were conducted at 1 p. m. Monday at Gish Memorial chapel in Frederick by Rev. Laverne Laing of the Frederick Trinity Baptist church, assisted by Rev. John Smith, Manitou Methodist pastor.
Miss Ruth Foundren sang two comforting hymns, accompanied at the organ by Miss Frances Burkhardt.
Serving as pall bearers were Will Neumeyer of Manitou, Orvall Kelly of Tipton, Mac Birdwell, Jack Craig, Elvin Atkinson and Clyde Hawkins, all of Frederick.
Interment was in the family plot in Centerview cemetery in Laing Community. Another brother, Ernest Adams, died six weeks earlier on May 7.
John Lester Adams was born Dec. 31, 1881 to John Wesley and Melissa Dickenson Adams at Weddington, Ark. As a small child he moved with his parents to Gainesville, Texas. When this part of Oklahoma was opened in 1901 the family came to what is now Laing Community.
Adams was early affiliated with the Methodist church. On Nov. 1, 1906 he was married at Laing to Miss Melinda Manis of Sweetwater, Tenn., who was a teacher in the community. They lived at Manitou, where he was in the grocery business and farmed, then moved in 1925 to Frederick where she died in 1942.
Surviving are three children: John D. Adams of Stillwater, Mrs. Harvey Puckett (Elsa) of Woodland Hills, Calif., and John Lester Adams (Jack) of Lincoln, Nebr. Another son Cecil died at the of six in 1918.
Also surviving are ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren, one brother, Herman Adams, and two sisters, Mrs. Will Young and Mrs. Paul Collins, all of Tipton.
