Portugese writer. Born to a family of landless peasants in Ribatejo, he grew up in Lisbon. After attending a technical school, he worked as car mechanic. He then engaged in journalism, becoming assistant editor of the newspaper Diário de Notícias. First book in 1947 "Terra do Pecado". Most famous works: "The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis", 1984; "The History of the Siege of Lisbon", 1989; "Blindness", 1995. In 1998, won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
According to press, his ashes shall be buried under an olive tree from his birth town to be planted in a Lisbon parc near the Saramago fundation
