The History Of Washington, Illinois
Benjamin Kindig was the father of B. W. Kindig, and was born in Lancaster County, PA., in 1783, where he remained for about thirty years. In 1807 he was married to Miss Esther Witmer, who was also born in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania in 1785. They both lived long and useful lives and died at advanced ages.
B. W. Kindig was the oldest son, and was born in Lancaster County, PA., in 1806, and at the age of four years, was moved with his parents to West Virginia, where he remained at home and received his early education at the common schools at that country. When he was about twenty-five years old, he engaged in surveying land, and pursued that business for several years.
In 1833, he married Miss Eliza Kindig, who was born in Lancaster Co., PA. in 1816. Immediately after his marriage he settled on a farm in Augusta county, VA, where he was successfully engaged in farming for several years, and in the meantime also successfully practicing medicine.
In 1842, he sold his effects in Virginia and moved to the state of Illinois, settled in Woodford county, and engaged in farming; but it was not long until his services were required to fill the office of county surveyor of Woodford county, which honorable position he held for eight years.
In the spring of 1844, he lost his wife and was left the father of three children, and in the same year, his circumstances in life were such that it was necessary for him again to marry, and accordingly he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth True Page, who was born in the state of New Hampshire, in 1812. She died in 1868.
Mr. Kindig still kept his family together as best he could until 1869, when he was again convinced that it was "not good for a man to be alone," and was for the third time joined in marriage-the last time to Mrs. Elizabeth Kindig, widow of Henry W. Kindig.
B. W. Kindig has always lived a moral and Christian life, and has done his full share to support the gospel, and to improve the morals of this county. In 1870 he became a citizen of the flourishing town of Washington, and is at this time one of the popular and successful merchants of that thriving town.
