Curtis Jones Clement, 67, retired Bloomfield, New Mexico high school track coach and teacher, died January 9, only hours after the Bloomfield Board of Education had named the new track facility at BHS the Curtis Clement Track Field in honor of his achievements and service.
He was the son of Guy Clement and the late Mrs. Clement and was born and grew up in Wellington.
He graduated from Wellington (Texas) High School with the Class of 1932 and received his bachelor's degree from West Texas State University in 1936. He later received his master's degree from Highland University in Las Vegas, Nevada.
He taught and coached at Dodson one semester. Then at San Jon, New Mexico two years, also at Fort Sumner and Alamogordo, before going to the Bloomfield system in 1958.
He had served as the first principal of Mesa Alta Junior High School 9 years before going back to the classroom to teach math and coach the high school track team.
After retiring, the Curtis J. Clement Track Award was established to be given to an outstanding boy and girl track competitor each year.
Funeral services were at Bloomfield, and burial was at Bayfield, Colorado, where the family has a summer home
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Clement of Bloomfield; a son, Royce Clement of Hotchkiss, Colorado; two daughters, Mrs. Marlyn Partain of Farmington and Mrs. Carol Bridges of Denver; his father, Guy Clement of Wellington; a brother, Buford Clement of San Ysidor, New Mexico; and three sisters, Mrs. Nina Ledbetter of Twin Falls, Idaho, Mrs. Johnny (Mildred) Pugh of Amarillo and Mrs. Paul (Amazel) McKinney of Borger.
