From the Historical Society of Easton (CT):

Nehemiah DeForest was born in Stratford in 1743. After the Declaration of Independence in 1776, he served as a corporal under Captain Joseph Birdsey. He was also part of a watch guard at the coast and a member of a "Committee of Inspection" that served to provide necessities for soldiers. As one of the original early settlers of the North Fairfield parish, Nehemiah married Mary Lockwood in 1779 and had six children. He built a fine New England farmhouse where he also kept a store and tavern. At his death in 1801 at the age 58, his estate inventory showed him as a man of means, faith and learning. In addition to his Bible, evangelical magazines and song books, he owned the collected works of the 17th century Puritan minister, John Flavel, and those of the famous 18th century preacher, George Whitefield. An edition of Dwight's "Short But Comprehensive System of the Geography of the World" first published in 1795, suggests he was also curious about distant lands, peoples and their customs.

Inscription

The wise, the just, the pious, and the brave,
Live in their deaths, and flourish from the grave;
Grain hid in earth repays the peasants care,
And ev'ning suns set but to rise more fair.
