Received a common school education at home, and spent two winter terms at the Oneida Conference Seminary at Cazenovia, N. Y. In 1841 he was appointed to a cadetship at the Military Academy, West Point, graduating in the class of 1846.
He became 2d Lieut., 4th Infantry, Feb. 16, 1847, and served in the Mexican War.
He was engaged in the capture of San Antonio, Aug. 20, 1847; in the battle of Churubusco, Aug. 20, 1847, where he was wounded; in the battle of Molino del Ray, Sept. 8, 1847, where he was brevetted 1st Lieut. for "gallant and meritorious conduct," and was with the Heavy Battery against Chapultepec. After the war he was sent to the Pacific Coast. He became 1st Lieut., 4th Infantry, Jan. 31, 1850, and was killed in a skirmish with the Indians near Red Bluffs, Cal., Mar. 24, 1853.
