US Congressman. After graduating from Emory and Henry College in Virginia, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and established a practice in Wytheville, Virginia. In 1861, he entered the Confederate Army as a captain of Company C, Forty-fifth Virginia Infantry. Advancing to major in 1862, and lieutenant colonel in 1864, he was captured near the close of the war and held prisoner on Johnson's Island, Lake Erie. Following the war, he was a member of the Virginia State Senate from 1869 to 1871. Davis presented credentials as a Democratic member-elect to Congress and served from March 1873 to March 1874, when he was succeeded by Christopher Y. Thomas, who contested his election. He then resumed law practice in Independence, Virginia.
