William Pratt was born in Abbeyville County, South Carolina September 27, 1798, was raised on a farm and was married to Martha Murdock, December 31st 1823.

To this union was born three boys and four girls, in the following order:
1) Charles Felix Pratt (1824 - 1901)
2) Joseph Abner Pratt (1825 - 1877)
3) Mary Elizabeth Pratt Kay (1830 - 1904)
4) Sarah Pratt Callaham (1832 - 1909)
5) Martha Jane Pratt Carwile (1834 - 1881)
6) Emma Caroline Pratt McKeown (1836 - 1916)
7) Thomas James Pratt (1838 - 1903)

All of the children were raised to mature man and woman hood and were brought up under Christian influence of the Missionary Baptist Church. William held a prominent position in what was called Little River Church, during his life.

William was a farmer by occupation. The community in which he lived employed him to teach school during his middle life, as he was a good scholar for his day and generation. His family all acquired a fair common education.

He was a busy, useful man, managed the business of many of his neighbors in settling estates.

In December, 1862, he was stricken with typhoid fever from which he died, within one-half mile of where he was born, on January 26, 1863.
