US Congressman. The son of Congressman Isaac Coles, he attended Hampden-Sidney College and Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in Virginia. He served as a second lieutenant in the Second Regiment of Light Dragoons in the War of 1812 and was promoted to the rank of captain of riflemen on the northern frontier. Honorably discharged in 1815, he returned to Virginia and served as justice of the peace and as a member of the State House of Delegates. Elected as a Jacksonian Democrat to Congress in 1834, Coles served five terms, from 1835 to 1845. He did not seek a sixth term and retired to his family plantation, "Coles Hill".
