Homer Franklin Gilbert was born in Indian Territory (Oklahoma) to Isaac Rufus Gilbert (1859-1915) and Mary K. Dare Gilbert (1861-1936) in 1882.

He married Laura Bertha Aubuchon (1890-1972) in 1909 in St. Francois County, Missouri. One child was born during this brief marriage: Elsworth Hanson Gilbert (1912-1950). Homer and Bertha divorced when the child was a toddler and Elsworth was raised by his step-father Thomas Hampton Wilson (1884-1944), whom Laura Bertha Aubuchon Gilbert married in 1915. Elsworth adopted the Wilson surname.

Extensive DNA testing in 2018 proved that Elsworth Hanson Gilbert Wilson, however, was actually the biological son of Charles Joseph Lynde (1892-1927).

Elsworth married Lora Lee Ferrell (1919-1994) at Washington County, Missouri, in 1936, and was the father of eight (who were surnamed Wilson): Homer, Joanne, Mary Lou, Marie, Charles, Richard, Eddie, and Larry.
