CIVIL WAR VETERAN - 24 INDIANA INF.

Sebastian was the son of Jacob Buehler and Mary Katherine Sauter. He came to America with his parents in 1855. He married Mary Obrecht on 17 MAR 1869. They were the parents of Jacob (b: 1869 in Indiana), Henry (b: 1 APR 1876 in Iowa), Julia Louise (b: 2 JUL 1878), Sebastian Valentine (b: 9 FEB 1883), Anna (b: ABT 1886), Louise M. (b: ABT 1888), Emma (b: AFT 1888). 3 children died early in life.

BIO - In 1861, although only sixteen years old, he proffered his service for the support of his adopted country and enlisted in the twenty-fourth Regiment Indiana Light Artillery on September 28, 1861, being mustered in at Indianapolis, Indiana in 1862 as a private under the leadership of Capt. J.A. Sims. He served throughout the entire four years of the Civil War. The exposure to which he was subjected during the struggle left him in such physical condition that he was never in good health again.

Mr. Buehler returned to his home at the close of the war and on March 17, 1869 he was married to Mary Obrecht, who was born August 8, 1845, in New York State, daughter of Jacob and Louisa Obrecht who were natives of Alsace-Lorraine, Germany and came to America in the early forties.

In 1871 Mr. and Mrs. Sebastian Buehler came to Sac County and bought two hundred acres of land in Richland township (then Clinton) for four dollars an acre. Mr. Buehler's brother-in-law, O. Rudolph, accompanied him and the two were the first settlers in Richland township. Mr. Rudolph was later caught in a blizzard in Ida County and some years later died in Indiana, as a result of the terrific exposure to which he was subjected during the storm.

Mr. and Mrs. Sebastian Buehler were parents of nine children, three of whom died early in life. The others are Henry; Julia (Mrs. Wm. Kuehl); Emma (Mrs. Edward Hix - Mrs. Gil McFarland); Sebastian; Anna (Mrs. Henry Hix); and Louise (Mrs.. Dave Edgar).
