US Congressman. A 1776 graduate of the College of Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania), he studied for the law and was admitted to the bar. He served in the Revolutionary War as a first lieutenant and captain and was wounded at the Battle of Brandywine. After serving in the Virginia House of Delegates, he was elected as a Democratic-Republican to Congress, serving from 1795 to 1799. Elected again in 1800, he served from 1801 until his death in 1816 on his New Kent County, Virginia, plantation.
