Born as Margaret Elizabeth Hines, she went by Elizabeth ("Betty") since her mother was also Margaret Elizabeth.
Betty was home schooled by her mother until she attended high school. She graduated from high school just before her 14th birthday in 1924. Reed College required her to wait a year before admitting her as a freshman in 1925. She graduated from Reed with a BA in chemistry in 1929 at age 18.
She did graduate work in biochemistry at Stanford University, receiving an MA. While there, she attended a lecture by a young Linus Pauling, probably about hybrid orbitals, which she said amazed and confused everybody! She also recalled joining a group who came to cheer Herbert Hoover the evening of his defeat by FDR in November, 1932 when Hoover was visiting his brother on the Stanford campus. (She often referred to FDR as "that man"!)
Although a very private person, she was always active, in organizations such as AAUW, BPW, book clubs, and later in life, in amateur photography at a local and national level, achieving the Photographic Society of America's APSA and FPSA recognition. In the days before computers, she manually transcribed books for the blind by punching out Braile texts. When her husband went into consulting, she was the accountant and executive assistant.
