THE PETIT ASSAULT CASE
The case of BARNARD PETIT, of Cascade who was complained of by his brother-in-law, JOHN EARDLEY, for assault and battery, resulted in a conviction, and Petit was fined $100 and costs or 90 days at the Ionia House of Correction. The assault was a very aggravated one, and Eardley sustained serious injuries from the blows received.
On the stand Petit swore that he was not present at the time of the assault and therefore knew nothing about it. Witnesses were produced by the complainant to show that he was there and made the assault as charged.
After the trial he was immediately rearrested on the charge of perjury and gave bonds for his appearance for examination.
