Maggie was a daughter of Eleanor (Thompson) and Thomas Gardner. She was born in Wisconsin, and grew up in southwest Dunn County near Knight's Creek. (Her death certificate lists Eau Claire as her birthplace.)

On Christmas Day in 1875, she married William Elias Hendricks. Several years later, the young family moved west to Brooking County in Dakota Territory near the town of White. Though life was hard on the prairie, they had plenty of company, as the move involved the relocation of Will's three brother from Chippewa Falls, and a number of related families from the area of Sparta.

She moved to California about 1919, according to her death certificate. In the 1930 Census, she lives with her sister Nellie in Long Beach.
