US Congressman. He was born at "Epping Forest" in Lancaster County, Virginia. A student at Union College in Schenectady, New York, he graduated in 1819. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1821 and began a practice in Lancaster County. He would serve in both the Virginia House of Delegates and State Senate. Elected to Congress as a Jacksonian Democrat in 1830, he served two terms, from 1831 to 1835. After leaving Congress, he moved to Richmond County, Virginia, where he resumed his profession. He died at his estate, "Wilna", in Richmond County, in 1840, and is buried there.
