A military escort from Sheppard Field conducted funeral services for S/Sgt. Wayne Ballard, 20, from the First Baptist Church in Olney with the pastor, Rev. W.H. Townsend officiating.

SSgt Ballard was killed in an air crash last Thursday, near Phillips, South Dakota, while on a combat training mission in a B-29. Two of the bombers collided, killing the crews in both planes. Tommie Perkins, of Olney, witnessed the accident.

SSgt. Ballard was born and raised in Olney and had lived here all of his life. He had just received his overseas orders and had visited his parents in Olney just three weeks ago.

Survivors: parents; brothers - Cpl Buford Ballard, Sgt. Buster Ballard, Sgt. Mack Ballard, Don Ballard, J.C. Ballard; sisters - Mrs. A.J. Rutherford, Mrs. C.M. Phillips, Patsy Ann Ballard, Peggy Ballard.
