The second child and only daughter of the late M.A. and Mary Frances Hisle Collins of Madison County, Kentucky, Mary Anne Stokes, passed away on Friday, March 30, 2001, at the age of 83. Mrs. Stokes graduated from Model High School, as well as Eastern Kentucky University, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree, and later attended graduate school at the University of Kentucky. She taught children for two years in Madison County and later taught for fifteen years in the Jefferson County School District before Mrs. Stokes retired in 1981. In 1943, she married William Markham Erickson, Jr., of Independence City, Kansas, who was killed in the European Theatre of World War II in 1945, leaving her a widow. On April 6, 1946, she married Lee Duncan Stokes, Sr., of Monticello, Kentucky. The couple resided in New York City and Greenville, South Carolina, before moving to Louisville in June, 1953, where she worshipped as a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church for forty-seven years. Mrs. Stokes was a certified genealogist and member of fourteen lineage and heredity organizations; in particular serving as Honorary State Regent for the Daughters of the American Revolution from 1989-1992, acting as a charter member of the Kentucky Regents Club, and practiced as president of the Society of Boonesborough. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Mr. Lee Duncan Stokes, Sr. Survivors include two daughters, Anne Moore and Frances Stokes, a son, Lee Duncan Stokes, Jr., five grandchildren: Joseph Cecil Harper, Jr., Charles Duncan Harper, Marianne Stonefield, Patricia Frances Bergman, and Christopher Ethan Stokes, as well as three great-grandchildren: Paige Harper, Natalie Christina Stokes, and Ethan Ryan Stokes. She is greatly missed by many.
