Miss Hinkle joined the Ball State University and Burris faculty in 1948. A native of Clarendon, Texas, she was a graduate of West Texas State Teacher's College in Canyon. She earned a master's degree at the University of Denver and a doctorate in education from Indiana University.
She taught in Denver and Grosse Point, Mich., public schools. Her professional affiliations included memberships in several state and national recreational associations.
In 1983, she and her longtime friend, Alice Nichols, former director of the Ball State Art Gallery and chairman of the art department, moved to Port Isabel, Texas.
The youngest of 12 children, Miss Hinkle is survived by several brothers and sisters.
There will be no funeral services or memorials.
