TOMMY LEE SHORT, a retired machinist for Phelps-Dodge Copper Co., passed away Sunday, June 13, 2010 at his residence in Claypool. He was 70.

Born in Bisbee, AZ to Ira and Edith Short, he attended school in Miami where, upon his High school graduation, joined the U.S. Air Force in 1957. He was honorably discharged in 1961.

We went to work at Sleeping Beauty Mine in Globe as an apprentice machinist adn eventually was employed at every copper mine in the Globe-Miami area. He left Arizona for a while where he worked on atomic submarines in Washington and at power plants in New Mexico. He returned to AZ in 1985 and to work at Phelps-Dodge . In 1991 he suffered a stroke and had to retire. He truly loved being outdoors with fishing, hunting, and devoting time to family being his favorite things.

He is survived by his wife: Deborah E. Short of Claypool, AZ, daughters: Kelli M. Steinke(Kevin) and Lori R. Short, both of Washington, a son: Darin Short(Linda) of Missouri, sister: Clara G. Basso(Raymond) of Livermore, CA, brothers: William E. Short(Helga) of Globe, AZ, and Stephen K. Fink(Shirley) of Texas, 17 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter: Billi Jo Taylor, sister: Peggy L. Holland, and brother: Marvin R Evans.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 18, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Lamont Mortuary Chapel.

Interment will follow at Mountain Breeze Memorial Gardens in Miami.
