Thompson B. Wheelock was appointed a Cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1818, and graduated 10th in the Class of 1822 as a Second Lieutenant in the 4th Artillery Brigade. He served in various garrisons along the East coast until 1829, when he resigned: from 1830 to 1833 he was President of Woodward College in Cincinnati, but joined the Army again, this time in the 1st Dragoons. He fought Indians on the western frontier in the Pawnee Expedition: though brief, it was very costly in lives; he wrote a report on the expedition which was published in the records of the U. S. Senate (Sen. Ex. Doc. 1, 23d Cong., 2d Sess., pp73-93) and was reprinted in 1978 under the title Expedition to the Pawnee Pict Village in 1834.

He then fought in the Second Seminole War, where he died at age 35, six days after participating in the battle of Micanopy. (This would make the year of his birth probably 1800 or 1801).
