Thomas was the second son of Thomas and Ann Gardner and was baptized on 3 April 1814 in Lancashire. The family emigrated from England when James and Thomas were very young.

Some accounts have his wife Mary Phillips born in England; others state Quebec where they met and married.

Mary died 20 months after the birth of their 10th child. The middle children were taken in by their married siblings and, according to the 1871 census, Thomas briefly remarried to an American named Lucy who cared for the two youngest.

Thomas was a farmer most of his life, spending his final years first with his youngest daughter Clara (my great-grandmother) and then with his oldest son George.

Thomas is buried in the Greenlay Cemetery, founded by his daughter-in-law's family.

Additional children include:

Daniel Gardner 1847 –
Unknown Gardner 1851 –
