Benjamin Hollister was the son of William and Orra Willard Hollister and was one of 13 children: Henry, Elizabeth, George, Aurelia, James, Charles, Mary, William, John, Josiah, Robert, and Frederick. He was born in Berkshire County, Massachusetts and came with his brother, John, to Perrysburg after the War of 1812. Benjamin married Lucy McKnight and with his brother, John, opened a general store in 1817 which eventually also housed a warehouse. Later the brothers opened a store in Perrysburg due to the constant flooding of Orleans. When Benjamin died, a newspaper reported that he had dealt in the fur trade with the Indians and that in 1832 the government had commissioned him to accompany the Ottawa and Miami Indians who were being exiled west of the Mississippi River. The Benjamin Hollister house still stands in Perrysburg.
