US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served Ohio's 9th District in the United States House of Representatives from 1955 to 1981. The great-grandson of former Congressman James M. Ashley, he served in the Pacific Theater, while with the US Army during World War II. Upon returning home, he graduated from Yale University in 1948, and attained his law degree from Ohio State University Law School three years later. Prior to his congressional career, he served on the staff of Radio Free Europe, and advanced to assistant director of special projects. During his tenure in Congress, Ashley was a proponent of anti-poverty and housing legislation.
